Trying to figure out why my speedo was not reading anything. I removed the cable this morning, and it is all in one piece. Looking at the parts list, I think I need a different speedo pinion for an OD trans. My car was originally a 3spd with 3.90 rear axle. I converted to R11-OD of unknown year. (Are there numbers on the trans that I find to determine vintage of the trans?)
I believe I have speedo pinion 354976, but need 412442. Anybody have experience that the pinions are different for OD and Non OD trans? I thought since the rear axle stays the same, I could re-use my pinon, but I guess not. Here is what I was reading in the parts list. Also, is the speedo cable different for the OD trans? Thanks for any hints!

Can't believe it. I saw another packard here in India. Ok, printed on a shirt, but it has bombay plates. Model year 47?

The OD specific speedo gear and cable are here, so they will be installed soon and tested. The speedo cable is only about 1 inch longer than a normal manual trans speedo cable, but as you can see, the pinion gear is very different. That is the speedo pinion for the OD trans on the plastic bag.

Speedo works! I ventured out for a drive today. Got the overdrive working, but after a short while...the engine stalled. Uh-oh. Turns out I had ran out of gas! That was fairly easy to fix, but cost me some nerves today.
I was monitoring the voltage of my gen, and it was between 13 and 15 volts. 15 is a little high, but do you think I should worry? Have to start stretching her legs and see if I find anything else that needs attention.

15 is maybe a bit high but if you are not popping bulbs I don't think anything else will be damaged. The Packard max spec on the 55-6 12v models was 14.8v so 15 could just be a meter error.

OK, OK, I'll clean that stuff off the white walls! After I clean it off, I will save a lot of time not explaining to people what it is!
When I ran out of gas, it was shortly after installing the fuse in the relay for my OD. -So when the motor died after driving 1 mile in OD, I suspected something with the OD and the ignition. The OD only grounds out the coil briefly when you kickdown to get out of OD. Is that right? I am an OD newbie. Also, I am running pertronix and their 1.5ohm flamethrower ignition coil. The coil was pretty hot after running for a while. I know the coil generates some heat, but how much? It was hot, but not burning hot. It seemed warmer than engine temp, but I was still able to touch it.
