thanks for the information guys. i just assumed that with the pitting the sealing surface that i couldn't use it again. i will rethink that and have the machine shop look them over good. other than the pitting they look really good.

i started to clean up the rocker arm and other pieces, getting them all nice and shiny.

i will be calling the machine shop my family has been using for decades, but i got a few people to get ahold of first.

took some pics today while sweating my butt off in the garage today.

later,

Hank

Hank,

Don't give me too much credit for knowing anything. The story I told about the Dodge was true, but the intention behind the work on that car was just strictly "git 'er done." I do know that Packard was pretty darn proud of the valves they put in these engines (on one of your pics, it looks like they have the Packard script embossed on them). People literally have baskets of old Dodge flathead valves laying around, and we were just having fun putting the "original" back in after we wrenched it out. I hope you don't run across any badly stuck ones... they can be a bear.

As for whether to keep an old valve in--listen only to the experts, here and elsewhere. I don't know jack, most of the time, and try to indicate so to avoid confusion. But I confess that some things I do know, and am pretty particular about, as you may have noticed.

Good going on your steady work. But is it ever hot out! I think the temp here is at least 95, with a dewpoint of 94 and relative humidity of about 99%. Just beautiful.

Hope y'all had a happy 4th!

well, just been cleaning parts off lately, letting them soak in the purple juice, which is great stuff.

all the bearings came out really easy. the push rods are all nice and shiny, but aren't they supposed to have a hole in each end so the oil can go up the into the rocker arms? i didn't see any holes, they look solid, idk...i'll post some pics of the ends of the push rods to show you guys.

55PackardGuy, no worries dude, i'll have the machine shop look at them to see what can be done or if they are good enough. i want to get a 3-5 angle job on them, so we will see what happens. i do like that they say Packard on the, but noone will see them anyways LOL!

they lifters wont be reused since i am getting some mild cam work done my Jack Vines. but i cleaned one of them up and took it apart to show everyone. i am guessing they are original, but i don't know.

also waiting on some info on sprags for the torque converter, if not i will have to get some from somewhere so i can finish the torque converter. i am letting parts of the converter soak now. just don't soak aluminum in the purple juice i use...it'll eat it up. so i check everything with a magnet before i stick it in.

anyone care to comment on the cruddy looking L-shaped piece. i am sure it is for water, but wow....look at it, nasty!

i also set myself up a shelf for my old 20" tv so i can watch football and work on the Packard at the same time ;0) LOL! don't be jealous! LOL HAHA!

enjoy

Hank

That cruddy L shaped thing is your heater connection on the rear of engine head, right side. Should thread into the same plate that supports the Ultra throttle linkage which then bolts into the head over the water opening. Make sure the plate hasn't been distorted by tightening bolts too much or it can leak. Mirror image piece on L head has the temp sender threaded into it.

I know you're a stickler for authenticity so to get one that looks exactly the same will probably be good used from a parts car. I don't see a part number to try a vendor but maybe you'll get lucky and find one who knows exactly. If you want modern, then a good local industrial supply house should carry something that will work.http://fittingsandadapters.com/90hoselclams.html

HH thanks for the link, if i cannot locate a good used original, i will def. use your link! ;0)

took apart the fuel pump this weekend. i got a heck of a sunburn mowing the grass so i didn't feel like doing much else, but i did get to watch F1 racing in the garage while i had some fun. ;0) it was great!

the fuel pump was very nasty, lots of crud in it, but as you guys know i will make it all shinny and new again. i am sure this has been discussed here, but any good places to get a rebuild kit for this carter unit. i am sure Kanter/Max have them, but just wondered where everyone else has gotten them.

i will check Kev's blog again from when he did his too.

that little aluminum plug that holds in the rocker peg....serioiulsy....are they serious......really......really....cause that was horrible. but i got it out and should beable to reuse it.

enjoy the photos. hopefully i will have some photos of the torque converter going back together soon. and then some nice clean engine parts for everyone to look at.

enjoy,

Hank

moved the block to mess with it, punched out the freeze plugs....all 4 of them LOL! cleaned up where the date was and it was 2/18/55, which goes along with the March dates on the car.

is there a sleeve where the oil pump goes in? or am i crazy....this is my first motor to rebuild so this is a learning proces for me.

i started working on the torque converter alittle. i got the sprags i needed from Ross, thanks Ross!, and am having some trouble seperating that piece to get to the sprags. so patience my son.....lol

anyone have any techniques to get that sprag piece apart without messing it up.

enjoy,

Hank

'55s started production in fall of '54, so there must be earlier blocks.
