Dave, thanks for the additional confirmation. The cylinder head gasket seems to be sound, with little reason to remove the head other than the collapsed lifter. Just wishful thinking on my part.
Joe, thanks much for sharing the images. That is a mighty handsome engine you have there. As far as the question on the splashers, do you mean the inner fenders (I guess that's what they are called)? If so, I don't think they attach anywhere at the bottom; just across the top and on the ends. If I have misunderstood your question, please let me know and I will do my best to help. Others including West can chime as well who may know. You are really going to have a fine looking car when you finish. I am inspired!

Correct. I was confused by "splashers" as well. If you're talking about the side panels, they do not attach at the bottom. All those holes at the bottom of the splasher are for a metal plate that holds the cloth "duster" (for lack of a known term for it). I believe most people replace the cloth with a rubber seal, but it was originally cloth. I'll check mine again when the sun comes up and see if I can take a photo for you, and to also check if there are any more attachment points.

You also may want to look into buying some of the original type wrap that goes around your fuel line between the fuel pump and the carburetor. I'm not sure where it's available, but I've seen it advertised somewhere in someone's catalog. Mine is original.

In regards to your heater hose, you may already know this, but it should be a copper tube leading from the water pump to about half way back. This is also available, but again I'm not exactly sure who has it.
This isn't my car, as mine is done the same way as yours. I haven't bought a replacement yet, because it's different yet in that it has to loop around the a/c compressor.

Out of curiosity, is this the way Packard did it? I would think the soft copper rubbing or vibrating against hard steel would lead to interesting results.

I vaguely remember the cloth and kept asking myself about it. I'm the last guy on technical, but the inside panels of the fenders are indeed called Splashers, part 7.011, and the dust ruffle is the Front Fender Splasher Seal 7.015, riveted apparently (9/64 rivets are listed with the seal...and that's why I have all these thin washers, so the rivets could hold the material better).
I'm missing the plate, it may be around here somewhere, but the dusters bit the dust so long ago (I've had the car since 1960), I think it's unlikely. A photo would be a great help. West, thanks, on the reminder for the water hose and the fuel line cover. There was just a small piece of the original one left, so we forgot it when we reassembled. There's a fuel pump shield I've seen advertised, but not sure if that's original equipment, but I can check my parts book. I see I need to start my own blog, recap what I've done and then do updates. I was a lousy project manager and that's why my car wasn't ready for my 50th high school reunion last summer. This summer my cousin's daughter is getting married in St. Helena in July. I'm shooting for that now. From the 1960 Bellarmine Prep (like Brophy) yearbook....gone surfin', surfin' usa.

I also doubt it. This was a display, but I would think there would have been some sort of bushing originally.

Mine did not have a fuel pump shield when I got it, but I put one on anyway. I don't know when that became available, but it's a good idea, especially with today's fuel. I also put a copper shield between the carburetor and the exhaust manifold.
