Wondering if the connecting rods and pistons from a 1951 288 engine will work in a 1952 327 9 main engine? If so, would there be any consequences I need to be aware of?

PISTONS INTERCHANGE, RODS DO NOT UNLESS YOU ALSO CHANGE THE CRANKSHAFT

Thanks for the info. Fred. I do have both complete engines. Would the 288 crank simply swap right over into the 327 or would some kind of modification be necessary? Also, seems like I read somewhere that doing this would produce some kind of performance gain? Can't really remember the details.

G'day shadetree77,
to PackardInfo. I suspect the 288 crank, being 5 main bearings, would not interchange into a 9 main bearing block, but will wait for the more expert than me to properly advise.

Also, I invite you to include your Packard/s in the Packard Owner's Registry.

You will be changing the 288 into a 327, no modifications needed. Intake manifolds are different slightly, suggest you use the 327 one for better performance and the 327 carb which is calibrated differently.

Cyl head I believe is same, may have #'s 288 and 327 cast into it. Further thoughts on head tomorrow

Fred, I think he was asking about swapping crankshafts, not the engines.

I missed that he was swapping into a 327 9 main. In that case the crank from the 288 5 main will not work in the 327 9 main. The pistons will work

Thanks for the info. guys. At this point it looks like my best bet is to buy a single connecting rod for my 327. By the way, when I got the 327 it had a rod that was literally twisted in two with a busted up piston attached to it. Head was already off and missing. I took oil pan off and can't see any damage. Hoping the block is rebuildable. Just need a replacement rod.

No problem Oz. Just added my parts car to the registry as well.
