Can someone tell me the thickness of the gasket material used for the thermostat housing gasket on a 41 Packard. Also should it be applied dry or with some type of sealant ? Thank you.

On my '37 it is normal gasket paper thickness. About 1/32", but that's just a guess. I sealed mine with Indian Head and nad nl leaks from there upon startup.

You can consider gasket sealant as optional as long as you use gasket paper rated for water or coolant and the facing metal surfaces are free of defects. If you are using a cork gasket I would certainly use a sealant.

Never bothered to measure gasket paper thickness, in fact never gave any thought to it. I'd guess something between 0.010 and 0.025" should give a satisfactory result.
