282 Timing Mark

I am trying to tune my rebuilt engine and get it fired up after all of the time working on my 37 120. I can get the engine turned over to the point where number one cylinder is in the compression stage to fire or the compression stage for the exhaust. There is a bit of rust on the flywheel, so I am having trouble determining where in the cycle the engine sits. My problem here is that my research into this has not produced any information on exactly what this mark on the flywheel looks like. I would appreciate any further information that anyone might be able to give on this. Thanks.

Is this any help? If I had to guess marks are a bunch of short faintly stamped straight radial lines. If they are anything like the very faint later driveshaft slip yoke phasing marks the rust could have really obscured them.

I know once the timing is confirmed several have transferred the info and made something to establish their own pointers and marks at the front of the engine.

I painted my marks white along with the pointer. Easy to see then.

Thank you both for your quick responses. I shall see about getting the marks on the flywheel more visible so that the timing may be set correctly. Again, thanks.

1937 Six 115C fix. I fastened a pointer to the timing chain cover and then marked the vibration damper with lines indicating TDC and advanced degrees. I coordinated the marks with those on the flywheel. This makes it much easier to check and set the ignition timing. JWL
