The water pump is leaking. What is the correct packing and what length? I assume it is cut into rings with mitred offset joints? One step at a time.

Sure, using split ring packing is just fine. You can also just buy some continuous cord graphited cord packing of a suitable diameter at your local plumbing supply house. That's how I did mine 40,000 miles ago and all it's required since is an occasional snugging of the gland. If you use split rings don't forget to stagger the joint locations.

Thank you for the packing. Changed it this weekend. Could have been an ugly job ,but turned out ok.
This is a great group, got lots of useful help and tips. A lot of knowledge out there.
Now, if only I could post photos.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.
