Packards During War - Classic Car, Dec 2009

The Dec 2009 issue of Hemmings Classic Car magazine has an 8 page article entitled "Classics During War" (pp 44-51). There are 3 Packard pictures that lead off the piece.
1. Gen. Dwight D Eisenhower leaning on a 1942 Packard Clipper (blackout) staff car talking to Lt. Gen Omar Bradley at his headquarters in France. Other Clippers are parked in the background.
2. Australian 7th Div. Troops looking over a Packard (1937?) used by the Japanese and captured in Balikpapan, Borneo, on July 3, 1945.
3. A street scene of 7 cars in Baltimore MD. Several are Packards bringing dignitaries to a shipyard opening in May 1943.

While there are lots of other pictures of other cars in the 8 pages, Packards seem to lead the story.

My dad was in the Australian army during WW2 and tells a story about Balikpapan. He was in intelligenge and part of his duties were instructing the troops about booby traps and such. Apparently they must have been listening because on this basis a lovely '36 LaSalle Coupe was left harmlessly sitting in a street, keys in the ignition, for about a week until one day a soldier jumped in, started it up and drove away, no problems, no explosions!

Great story Mal about your dad.
I tried to uplaod a scan of the first 2 pages of the article with the 3 pictures I described, BUT can't seem to get a jpeg format or size that the website will upload.

I love the history and stories.
[BTY, I have a 39 LaSalle sedan! Sweet machine.]

Sorry I had to delete the article. I am sure the Hemming's Legal department would not be happy the posting of an article that just came out in their copyrighted Publication. Don't want the man coming down on me.

Sorry Kev

I thought 2 of 8 pages was not a violation. Apologies.

Actually, the article is a bit lightweight to disappointing. We have had better discussions on this PInfo Website.

What I was really fascinated by were the first three pictures of Packards. Ike, Bradley and a 42 Clipper - thAT's vintage WWII. And Mal's dad's Australian 7th Division troops in Boreneo- what a co-incident

The credits indicate that the pictures are from the National Archieve. Maybe I can fine them elsewhere.

Dan,

For identification purposes only, and having regard to this note at the foot of PackardInfo of, "Any copyrighted material remains the property of their respective owners is used here under the 'Fair Use' provisions of current intellectual property and copyright laws", I have copied the Hemmings page showing the Packard in question and it's either a '38 or '39, my lack of Packard recognition skills being well known here. Can we get a positive identification of the year here?

Kev, if you feels the reproduction of this page does not fall within the 'Fair Use' provisions, I will be happy to delete it.

Can't you just scan the pics and not the text since the pics are from the national archive? Or you could blur out the text.

I am sure that is possible, Charles.
I just max-out my tech skills for the weekend scanning the 2 pages.

In truth I am using Linux software and have not found or become comfortable with a full-service photo edit prog on this platform.

And again.
Kev - Delete if you think this is "non-fair use."
