Does anyone have a picture of the back up light switch and where it is on a 1953 Patrician. Should I get juice at bottom of steering column where the wire plug is? Thank You

Don't have a picture but here is illustration from serv manual on installation. Switch is in engine compt at the base of steering column mounted on a bracket just above the steering gear box. Assy held on by U bolt clamped around tube and actuated by gearshift lever.

Not sure which plug you mean at bottom of column. Inside the car at end of column shroud is a 6 wire round plug. That is directional signal switch. In engine compartment at end of steering box is a single horn wire.

Since you have a Patrician, the backup lights should get power from tie point on breaker in back of instrument cluster, goes directly to switch on bracket, back in under dash to a connector which then becomes part of body loom and continues to back up lights

can you send me link to picture so I can inlarge it. Can't read it . I did look at car but did not see any wires to test them. I was talking about plug under dash. I thought maybe switch was under steering wheel and came out bottom of dash. Need to find wires to test. Thank You

In the accessories section of service manualhttps://www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/servicemanual5154/Accessories_III.pdf. Illustration not that great but maybe better than pict.

Wiring diagram is herehttps://www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/wirediagrams/1953%2026th%20Series.pdf

If you have no bracket assy, it is possible your car never had them installed. So many things like that were optional then

Backup lights were standard equipment on the 54 Patrician, I'd guess they were in 53 as well. Assuming the switch is present and functioning, at the risk of stating the obvious, have you checked for a blown fuse?

On my '54 the backup switch is integrated into the Neutral Safety switch, and it is mounted on the steering column near the firewall (engine side). But this may only apply to the gear-start models.

I can't find the switch to test it.The power comes off the relay by the oil sending unit.

Sounds as if someone might have been rewiring your car if light power is coming directly from there. No relays by oil sender unless you mean the solenoid on starter motor. That is where the battery cable attaches and then the power for entire car including lights is drawn from that point but goes other places first.

As mentioned, the backup lights source would normally come from under dash. I don't believe there is a separate fuse unless it was added by others.

The bracket and switch may have been removed for some reason if you don't see them. Switch is a rectangular box about 1x2 inches with plunger coming out one end & having 2 terminals on back. Are there any wires dangling or appear cut off in the area of steering box. There should be a few wires in a short section of loom going to generator, horn, and oil sender. The back up lights may be with that bunch or may come off with ones going to stop light switch at end of power brake unit or master cylinder.
