nah, no Packard wood in there...just Texas cut Lowe's wood. White board...straight as i could find. and a crap load of brad nails....i love my little brad air gun.

the Packard Plant door i have is still for sale though. fyi.

the start up date will be this year sometime. def before salado next year thats for sure. i have to get the balancer rebuilt, the started rebuilt, the generator rebuilt, the distributer rebuilt, and run the wires, get the fuel pump rebuilt, redo the radiator, get the custom exhaust done (stainless with magnaflows).....tons of stuff....hmmm maybe it wont be this year after all. lol!

also gotta figure out (with everyone's help) how to start it without a dash or wiring harness in place.

it will be a suprise though... to me and everyone else...cause i have no idea when for sure.

we find out if my wife gets into nursing school tomorrow...so there is 2k a semester waiting to happen, but all for a better life.

Hank

Pretty simple, same as car thieves "hot wired" cars in the day. A jumper from the battery hot terminal to the coil terminal that would have gone to the ignition switch and of course a wire from the other coil primary terminal to the distributer will provide the ignition, though w/o the benefit of the ballast resister. If you're going to run it for any length of time, then jump to the ballast resistor. Then use another jumper to activate the starter solenoid.

If you plan to run it in the chassis for the public, it may be a good idea to get the fuel tank and lines in place. :)

Absolutely the engine can be run with little additional equipment installed. Many have witnessed engines "bench run" without even being in the frame. In fact, I witnessed an actual Packard 352 run this way. (It was an extra we had from a parts Clipper, and was sold after rebuild.

A good thing to consider for anyone buying an engine that is supposedly good. Have it bench tested before install, or before buying if possible.

not much going on since i'm saving for my wife's nursing school. we dont qualify for any assitance....but darnit to betsy that keeps me from my Packard! geesh, don't they know this! lol!

i restored my Grandmother's old cedar chest, but left some of the old charm on it. polyed the top to a hard shell, we use it as a coffee table. found the fine arts section of the fort worth star telegram from 1962 lining the bottom of it, so its old. i sanded the top flat again and then coated it all up. the side are just one fresh overcoat of provincial stain. i matched the top pretty good i'd say.

i got bored one night and took apart my starter to start getting it cleaned up and so that if i get lucky and have some extra money i can restore it.

Untill then, i put the body back on the Packard and pushed it into the third bay and covered it up with a huge tarp. poor girl.

probably gonna take apart the generator to clean at the same time.

but when my wife finishes nursing school...she should start working at over 50k per year. so Packard progress will fly then.

Hank

Henry,

Good to hear from you, don't stay away so long. It looks like the brushes were on their last legs. You got to it just in time. Based on your other work, that starter will be finished nice enough to be displayed in a museum. You should have no problem getting all the parts you need from an alternator/generator rebuilder. There must be many in your area.

Did I tell you about my new Hot Rod...

yes the brushes are in sad shape, its pretty nasty in this thing.

Henry,

The S2000 sold quickly. Maybe I did not ask enough for it.

Stay tuned for more on the Hot Rod.

I got in early and secured four reserved grand stand seats for all three days. Basically a $100 per day. General admission is much less. I understand that most of the grand stand and premium seating is already sold out, but still many general admission tickets available. I would rather watch the race on TV than try and find a viewing spot in general admission. Been there done that.

Your starter looks like a good rebuildable core. You should be fine.

Hank,

I consider you a trail blazer! (that's good thing to those of us in the s
outhwest).

Your pictures, technical advice and fearless pursuit of things mechanical inspire me. Thank-you for doing what you do here at Packardinfo. It is very much appreciated.

thanks for the kind words!

i have more to show, but for now can anyone tell me why and what function difference there is between these two generator end plates? one has this thing off to the side of the bearing. the one without the extra thing off to the side was off the generator I got from "let the ride decide" and the other came off my car.

also one of the fans has 13 blades and the other 12. weird. the 13 blade was off my car and the 12 off the generator I got from Mike.

thanks,

Hank
