thanks guys, i appreciate it!

some weekend work.

got a bushing installer from harbor freight and a blind hole puller as well. got tired of renting them and just bought them for cheap.

here are pictures showing the sizs of the bushing installers i used and the part numbers on the bushings (no part number for drive end bushing, destroyed old one getting it out). i have no idea the supplier, you'd have to ask Jason at AER.

the CGB is the old bushing, original maybe, no clue.

Just a few comments if anyone is interested. The CGB bushing would be an aftermarket bushing, not original. Delco never put OE part numbers in their bushings like some of the others (Autolite), the originals were always blank.

I don't think the original field coil insulators were fishpaper. Wasn't fishpaper somewhat brittle. There's really nothing to them. As a matter of fact, most rebuilders don't even put them back in. Whenever I'm working on a Low Torque (thick coil like what Henry is working on here) starter I always put new ones in. Why, because they were originally there! And I'm only to assume that if they went to the expense of putting them in, there was a reason. Kidding, Obviously the reason is to give a little extra insurance against a short to the pole piece. Once Delco went to high torque, which is the same case but thinner coil, they quit using them all together.

If anyone has any questions on this type of stuff, feel free to ask. Good luck with the project Henry & Have fun!

Jason

thanks for filling in the information Jason and for all the help you have been giving me. i cannot recommend you enough to the forum members if they need any help or parts or even a rebuild. this guy is another good asset to this website!

last night's work:

i got the solenoid rebuilt. its not the prettiest thing i've ever done, but thats okay cause it'll be down low on the motor.

it does work, i tested it, after some trial and error on how to hook it up. thanks to youtube for the help there. it had been a very long time since i had used my remote starter switch and couldn't remember how to hook it up.... remember positive ground.

the solenoid repair kit has me cutting off the old bolt and soldering a new wire on that comes outside the housing and solders to a tab connected to the new bolt. i made sure to solder well so it didn't come off later.

make sure you use the rubber washers under the bolts when putting it together too. i'll take a picture of the directions when i get home, i forgot that part. its a pretty nice kit, although harder to get the cap off later since its all soldered up. the old one you just unbolt.

As Jason said in a recent email...make sure your grounding points are free of paint that could cushion and hender the ground. ie. end plates, and bottom of mount for solenoid to housing, etc etc.

for those looking at my mess of wires.

postive ground to left side
positive ground to bottom side
negative to top side
starter switch on top side and on right side.
hit switch
plunger sucks in
works.

p.s. MADE IN USA BABY!!

okay i'm going to be honest....this has been the hardest rebuild i have done on this car so far. everything is so crammed in this housing and with big hands...it sucks.

i got the spring on....there is a trick to it (do it before you connect the end to the housing.....which i learned after destroying the paint job...i had to repaint as you can tell.

the tag is on, not straight, but its on there.

this has not been my favorite build so far. i'd rather do the trans again.

Henry,

I appreciate the way you have gone about repairing and restoring, rather than replacing, so many parts of this car. You have to love to tinker to do this much of it this well. I enjoy tinkering, too, but would never tackle the number of complex parts you have done, and really in a remarkably short time considering the detail involved. Good show!
