Possible that the pickup tube has a rust hole in it at about the halfway point. So when the fuel level get below the rust hole, all you are sucking is air.

Here's a photo of the inside of tank.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... .php?post_id=110101#forumpost110101 The end of tube points down into the small triangular depression seen on tank bottom. IIRC, it is roughly 3/16" or so above the bottom & no screen -- just the open tube.

ok new problem so my nose cone of my starter broke. now my starter is a direct drive with out a plunger for the bendix gear. i have been looking at starters and found some that are listed for a 1955 packard but they have a top plunger arm that kicks the bendix gear out to the fly wheel. witch is the coerect style or can i use ither one ???????

The Clipper Super would have had an Autolite MDD 6301 or MDF 6008 with straight Bendix drive. The Delco starter with plunger was used on the 55 Custom Clipper and all Packard models. A complete Delco unit with solenoid will fit on the smaller Clippers.
Most unusual for the nose to break unless starter was misaligned or loose or maybe the engine backfired when starting??? Usually we've been hearing more of that problem with 6v starters run on 12v conversions.

It could happen is the starter bolts were loose and the ring gear clipped the casting of the nose cone.

I think both are quite up to the job. Your car had Autolite everything so it might be nice to keep it that way. The problem could just as well happened to a Delco if there is an external cause. Obviously if you have a Delco starter and solenoid available, then that would dictate what would get the car on the road fastest.
