thanks man, more of a necessity then anything because it is cheaper to rebuild what i have then replace it. i do like tinkering, but i tell you on this starter....wow...pita!
its done, but only after making SERVERAL mistakes. it bench tests and spins fast. stick a fork in it. pics show how to check gap using 3 C-Cell batteries. positive to ground....negative to switch terminal....push in plunger....it holds....check gap and adjust the linkage. mine is at .062.....book says between .010 and .142...so i split the difference. next up the generator and the rebuilt harmonic balancer should be here today or tomorrow. okay now to reveal something that has been in the works for some time.
JW and I made a trade. 1 Packard plant door for a complete, both sides, set of NOS constellation lower trim, front to back. we met up in Waco yesterday and had a good time chatting and exchanging. I'm always glad to see my Packard friend from Austin. My son came with me and, after JW and I parted ways, we went to the Waco Zoo and walked off our Sonic lunch. Then we headed home. not done Packarding, i rented a harmonic balancer installer, which i had to rig to work. i went to lowes and bought a 1 1/4 x3 piece of conduit, probably should have bought a 2" piece, but the 3 worked. i recommend 2 in the future. the reason for this was to push out the nut so i could get at it with my wrench, since the HB is concaved. Hank,
Great seeing you and your son. He is sure growing up. Trip home was uneventful, and the traffic on IH-35 was quite sane, for a change. We carried the door into my office and it is now sitting, temporarily, behind the office door. It looks good there. Still trying to figure out how I will use it, mount it as the office door or just mount it to the wall. I want to get a frosted glass and have some kind of sign painted on it. I will ask the carpenter who is doing a garage extension project for me about how to preserve the door and maybe rebuild the wall to mount the door. I don't want to modify the door in any permanent way. Nice work on installing the HB. I have not done this job, but I read recently that it is advised not to tighten the front cover until the balancer is in place. This is to make sure the seal is centered. Take care, John (o[]o)

i've read that too, but maybe that was for a rope seal. i have neoprene upgrade. who knows...its on there now.
Here are some shots showing my distributor rebuild with the three possible configurations i can go with. dual points single point electronic probably going to go with electronic and keep everything i need to convert to single point in the trunk, incase i ever need it. this will consist of the point setup to attach to the plate and the copper core wires. the electronic setup cannot use copper core wires and i will have to go with aramid or the like. oreilly's carries 7mm aramid wire by the foot.
