On some engines the oil pump can be turned by hand to churn up some initial oil pressure before starting after long periods of not running. HOWEVER, I assume your 47 is like my 48 288 Packard engine. No way to churn any intial oil pressure on mine due to the way the oil pump is driven by the engine.

Wes,

Enjoyed your videos, keep 'em coming.

A question, did you wear what would be described as "a helmet cam" for the under Packard video?
And I'm impressed that you can wrench and commentate at the same time.

Thanks Ozstatman and PackardV8,
First off the mileage as it appears 45860, but I don't know how accurate it is. Next question handheld video camera, while turning wrench with other hand.
Happy Thanksgiving to all as I get the next video out.

Sorry I was so long-winded on the oil pan, but I think it is something everybody should think about at least once.

I hope everyone is enjoying the videos, and I'm trying not to be too long-winded as I work, plus I'm still learning how to use YOUTUBE and iMovie at the same time. Being right-handed and wrenching with my left does slow me down. And when you see me using both hands you won't hear me talking.
So here's hoping, that in the future someone will find these videos helpful and as always if you see me doing something wrong or a better way let me know. We all learn by our mistakes.
Plus I find that if I see someone else do it, than when I do the same thing it does not seem to be as big of a job.

Wes,

I am enjoying the videos, as a new owner of a Super Clipper I find them most interesting.

Keep up the good work!

First of all, return the nuts to the same rod bolt as they were removed from. After that, I can only tell you what I've done - if it only took a very small amount (2-3 ft.-lbs) of under torqueing to reach the cotter pin location, I've done that. I don't overtorque. When that wasn't an option I removed the nut and dressed the flat on a piece of emery cloth glued to a piece of flat glass until I had removed enough to get an alignment. Don't forget to clean thoroughly before installing again.

PS - just checking the rod bearing cap torque specs in Motor's Manual I see an interesting anomoly; for the 46 Super 8 engine they show 56-58 ft-lbs, but for the 47 Super 8 (same engine) they show 60-65 ft-lbs. so perhaps you have a little more leeway to tighten. Motor's shows the same specs for the main bearing caps, 82-85 ft.-lbs. I didn't check to see what the Packard specs were.

Thanks OD, I got my torque reading from THOMPSON Repair and Tune-Up Manual 1939-1948, since it was handy. It says for the 6 & 8, 45-46 ft. lbs. and Super 8, 56-58 ft. lbs.
I just checked the 1946-1950 Packard Service Manual and it also saids to use 60-65 ft. lbs. and this is based on the size of the bolt.
I will give it another try and see what happens.
Thanks!
Wes
