mine is an el cheapo flux core 90 amp wire welder from Harbor Freight. doesn't have a gas option on it. 79 bucks with the neverending slew of coupons. http://www.harborfreight.com/90-amp-flux-wire-welder-68887-8494.html

after i grind down the welds...it looks fine on most things i do.

not sure if i'll do any other cars, but a 37 coupe in patina would be fun as well.

i've never played with any other kind of welder. i can make them look really pretty decent if i just take my time and go very very slow. basically like a string of tack welds in a row, otherwise my welder will blow holes right in this thin metal on the car.

put my welder to thick angle iron....does a superb job.

Flux works fine for thicker metal. Can be a bear with thin. I ended up hooking a dimmer switch in middle of an extension cord. That allowed me to dial down the power to the flux welder and I had less blow through.

Are you guys using the shielding gas or just the flux cored wire and no gas with your mig welders? Don't think my welds look as good as either of yours. To get them better it was suggested I go ahead and hook up the gas setup. Debating on that one since it means buying another bottle.

I started with flux wire (no gas). If you look at my early welds in my trunk on my blog, you can see how poppy, lumpy, and just plain ugly they are. Grinding makes them look better, but I found a lot of holes in the seam I thought I had filled in, but did not in reality. There is a lot of grinding when using flux.

Since switching to MIG (shielded gas), my welds are cleaner with better penetration. I do not have to weld off nearly as much slag.

Having used both, I made the commitment and bought a proper MIG welder and would not go back to the flux. If you have a gas option, I would recommend it highly.

got the gas door back today from the clear coat process.

the guy baked it...set it in the sun, chipped at it with a razor blade and the clear would not peel.

its nice and hard, i can't make a mark on it. no more tackiness on the linseed back either, baked it really nice.

its perfect! and the backside is still coated in linseed and pretty darn dry from the baking process.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the look. the yellow POPS even more now. BAM in your face! BEAUTIFUL!

i will bring the car in when i am done with the passengers fender, door, and the body repairs.

cost 1500. i like it, i have the biggest grin on my face.

Hank

Hank, I admire your approach to project work. You keep at it, trying different things until you get it done. Many times frustration seems to overwhelm you, but you come back and defeat the garage demons. Keep it up.

Hank,

N' A, man. I really like the way it is looking. Thumbs up from here. I will be talking to the East Grand Packards tomorrow and mention what you are up to with your car. I am now wishing mine hadn't been repainted back in the 60's.

I love it.

yeah i can get a bit frustrated at times, youth....what you gonna do. this weekend was a good weekend though. maybe i shouldn't have said that out loud.

had to do some maintenance to the z3...waterpump, etc, but on sunday it was 75 and rainy and cool.....garage doors up....Packard work commenced.

had the kiddo out there with me in the morning and sent him inside when i was ready to weld in what was my poor excuse for a patch to weld up that hole in the front portion of the rocker. took me about 1 hour to form that thing and cut it to fit. it isn't pretty, but it was my VERY first time EVER forming metal like that. plus i had a bunch of unseen rot that i had to just keep welding and welding and welding. i know....probably not right, but idgas...its covered and nobody will see it.

yes i will grind it down. also the inside of that panel will be filled with herculiner as i removed all the old rubberized material. this will keep the water out.

it'll get it all smoothed out when i'm done.

then the wife and the kiddo came back out and helped me stripped off the crudy rubberized coating on the floor. that passenger's pan is worse then i thought. may get a new one instead of fixing all that stuff. its pretty rotted.

i left the rubberized coating where it was still thick and good. no reason to burden myself on something i will coat over with herculiner and that nobody will see. it wasn't easy doing what we did....and that was with a huge scrapper and heat gun.

i removed the seat mount. it will need some reinforcing on the mounting feet before i trust it to not rip out of the floor incase of a wreck. its pretty rotted as well. and i will replace the studs with new bolts as well.

anyone know why there is this little rectangle flap on the passengers floor pan near that blank body mount? there are also two rivot heads on that side that aren't on the driver's side. i have to replace that little flap as its rotted and just wondered what it was for.

Can't be sure with the view but what I think you're calling a flapper and unfinished mount looks suspiciously like the area an underseat heater would go.
