True, except for Canadian production which continued to use the metal plate in 1938.

With view to the great condition of this 400 my mouth is watering. The VIN plate is made in Germany, the price tag too ($39,000). Many thanks to the seller for submitting the data.

Gerd, beautiful 1955 Four Hundred. Amazingly nice condition. Interesting German vehicle info sticker to go along with the Packard, not Briggs, plate on the driver door. Thanks for sharing.

John, thanks. As Dave and others often pointed out, there shouldn't be a Briggs body number when the Packard isn't between 1941 and 1954. My pic description above is wrong.
Today a 1941 car, so possibly within the range but nevertheless without Briggs body number. The seller couldn't find a tag.
Dave, are the pics sufficent to catch the #s or do we need a second try? Click to enlarge.

Gerd, I think we have determined that the bodies for the 1941 and 1942 non-Clipper models were not built by Briggs. They only did the Clipper bodies in those years. Please let us know if you come across one of the non-Clippers with a Briggs body tag. So far, none have been located.

That's right JW, we finally confirmed that from the details of the Briggs contract as it was recorded in the minutes of a Board of Directors Meeting.

On another front I'm still slugging away entering into my database the information from the 450 or so 22nd/23rd series cars from the original Vehicle Delivery Records from McCormack Bros Auto Sales of Birmingham, AL. Since I have it handy I'm also recording paint and trim information and some may find it interesting that, at least for cars sold by this dealership, out of about 350 records reviewed thus far,

1. Despite 7 two-tone paint combinations available for the 22nd series cars, only 1 car thus far had two-tone paint. This may well explain why 2-tone paint offerings were dropped for the 23rd series. And just my opinion, but unlike the 21st series which can look stunning in two-tone, the 22nd/23rd never wore 2-tone graciously.

2. The least popular color by a long shot is Sardonyx Brown, only 1 vehicle. Most popular is pretty much a split between Grenadier Maroon, Lowell Gray and Sylvan Green.

Yes John, again right. I still remember this substantial thread including the eye-opening minutes of meeting from Dave, which can be found here.

Today a short excursion to the Kingdom of Belgium, where a Packard Six is asking to change hands. Well, again a 1938 and its decal is long gone. Let's listen to Dave:
