G'day Mike,
to PackardInfo, and I invite you to include your '38 Super 8 Victoria Coupe in the Packard Owner's Registry, plus your other Packard/s as well! Concerning your trans bearing query, I do know that when Wade was rebuilding a trans here in Oz he was able to find a specialist trans shop that was able to remove the "for life" bearing from the shaft and replace it. Check with trans/gearbox rebuilders in the land of the long white cloud! I've attached a photo of your Coupe, taken during last years Top of the South Rally, leaving the motel at Blenheim.

Many thanks, Wade. I know Denis did it, as have some of his parts, but wasn't sure of exactly what he did. My guys will sort it, I'm sure, but we wondered if anyone had a source of the small bits that are in the assembly.
will get onto the registry All the best to you two Cheers, Mike

Hi, all who read this,
We found the problem with the main shaft was a replacement shaft (not factory - not sure whose, perhaps Max Merrits), where a new shaft & gears had been very well made & machined: However, second gear was screwed & spot ended onto the top shaft, with brass bushes. (I have no idea where I got it from) The weld had come undone resulting in second gear unscrewing itself & the car selected two gears simultaneously with rather disastrous results. We have made up the necessary gear to press fir the collar as in the original factory top shaft: the roller bearings & other minor parts came from Max Merritt, so we now hopefully have a New "As From Factory" top shaft. I'd caution against using the other style shaft which can come undone If you use your car at all, rebuild it as the factory did. The other will probably fail! Michael Taylor
