The engine is a 359, not a 356. 356 is a 40-50 Custom 8.
I wouldn't bore more than .060, that's the limit for most engines. There are no pistons made larger than .060. You will get more horsepower perhaps a fraction of 1 horsepower, surely nothing you could notice or detect.

Are you sure that it is .060" over?
Standard bore for the 359 engine in 1954 is 3-9/16" which is .0625" more than the 3-1/2' bore used for the 288 and 327 engines from 1948 to 1954

If there is any doubt if a 288/327 block or 359 block the motor number on the pad above the starter position will start M6xxxxx for the 359. That engine was rated at 212 hp when new.

Good morning Nivek...Many classic automobile engines have been saved by new cylinder sleeves inserted into the bore. they will bring the bore back to the original standard size.
I would imagine that any good engine builder has had to make this repair many times. Ernie, Caretaker for 'Miss Prudence' a 1949 288 Deluxe.

Unless some modifications were made, I highly doubt it has a 356 in there. I don't believe that block is drilled for the motor mounts that the 51-54 motor/chassis use. Like other said, it is probably a 359. That a look at the motor number, that will put the issue to rest.
As others said, the 359 has a bigger bore than the 288/327 motor.

On second thought I believe the owner thinks it was originally a 3.500 bore and finding 3.560+ thinks it's overbored by .060.
The original bore on an 359 engine is 3 9/16" = 3.0625

Could the 288, 327 engines be bored out to use the 359 pistons? Or is the piston pin in a different location?
