1936 Packard 120 Horn Button Assembly

Does anyone know the exact configuration for assembly of the horn button, spring, and contact (with wire) as it goes into the horn ring hub for a 1936 120? It is probably the same for 1935 and 1937 also (just a guess).

Here are pictures of what I have. Maybe the contact (with wire attached) goes under that "retainer ring" that is located on the underside of the button? If so, then the contact would be captured by that ring.....

Thanks for the picture !! It appears that the contact is captured by the round retaining ring that is in the horn button. That would make sense. Now all I have to do is get the retaining ring out of my button without damaging it. Unlike other snap rings, it does not have any little holes at the ends to use the special snap ring tool. I'll try and use a little patience. Thanks again for verifying exactly what I thought.

One last question:

Can you tell me exactly where the wire coming out of the steering column connects at the relay? The relay I have is an old one that is not labeled. I understand that the horn contact actually make the "ground". There is a small ground strap between 2 posts on the horn bracket.

on my original harness that was used to convert to 12v. the wire coming from the steering box hooked to a wire on the main harness right where it came out of the box. then the horns themselves had a separate harness of their own. one of the wires on this harness connected to the battery positive and the other to a wire in the main part of the harness near the starter/firewall area.

the rest of the wiring on the other end of the separate horn harness connected to the relay that was mounted to the horns.

I have no idea if that relay was original or if the horn harness was original, but they appeared to be.

post number 45 in the above link has many pictures. don't judge though...all of that junk wiring is now gone and the car is getting rewired.

On some of the old relays the terminals themselves are labeled with a tiny letter stamped onto the metal. On some you have to remove the screws and/or any lock tabs to see them. Is there any indication of that on your relay? Other relays have the designations cast in the plastic or bakelite -- again in fairly small letters. Typically horn relays are B for Battery, S for switch or horn button and H for horns.

Here is a drawing from the parts manual showing a relay. I don't know if yours is like this one or is a more modern type with the terminals arranged in a straight row. I drew in a typical schematic of the horn circuit.. Hopefully between Cli55er and JW you will have an answer as to the correct wire connections.

I retrieved the 37 today to do some work on it and take it for a nice 20-mile drive. One of the jobs was securing the new Optima battery. Here are photos of the horn relay wiring connections on my car. I moved the horns from being mounted on the engine to the cowl wall, but used the original wiring and made no changes there.

I believe the 120Bs have different horns, but are probably wired in the same manner as mine. The large wire (center terminal) comes from the battery post on the starter relay. The small (end terminal) wire comes from the horn button that is routed through the steering column and box. A wire goes to each horn (end terminal). The relay is grounded through the case's mounting bracket. This is a typical horn relay setup.
