can someone point me in the direction of a different gear ratio that will fit in to my 833 rear axle?

I am not sure honestly, I have it out now due to some leaking seals and thought if I could buy a higher geared one that was interchangeable it would be a good time to make the change

If you want a higher (numerically lower) ratio, you'll have to first know what ratio you currently have. The ratios available from the factory for the 833 were 4.07, 4.38, 4.69 and 5.08.

Divide the number of pinion teeth into the number of ring gear teeth to get the ratio.

here are all the numbers I found on the gear this morning
"140436-12-61-Packard 0 30 577"

seems none are close to what you listed, can you help me understand this better?

You might have the 5.08:1 gear set. The middle "12-61" would indicate such a ratio. It is a very low (high numerically) gearing and I can see why you would want to change to a higher (low numerically) gear set.

It would be working great if you drive a lot of hill driving where you can't speed much anyway.

that really makes sense, the car was sold in denver colorado so I assume it was geared that way to allow for the mountains.
Thank you for your input, I'm learning each day and it only gets more fun!
