Pat,
for including your '34 in the Owner Registry. I note your description under CURRENT CONDITION: Basket Case and would hope this relates only to your current trouble.

Kev,

The Registry listing doesn't show the pic of the '34, but does display the pic when you open up and view the entry individually. Is this related to the picture size issue?

I think 'basket case' relates to my bank balance!
I think I mis-read the entry, the car is 'exellent condition' now. More exellent now thanks to this forum!

I've been collecting data on 34 Packards and if you're willing I'd like to get some data on your 1101. You could send it via a PM if you like. Can you provide:

1. "Thief-proof" number (large embossed number on cowl).
2. Vehicle number on the patent plate (716-xxx).
3. Right-hand or left-hand drive
4. Built by Packard-Detroit or Packard-Canada (on patent plate).

Many thanks.
Dave

Hi all,

Well it seems to be sorted.

Oil was being sucked up through the vacuum pipe from the petrol pump. I disconnected the pump and blocked off the vacuum pipe leading to the inlet manifold. I plumbed in a electric pump and went for a 50 mile drive.

The results were very interesting indeed!

The car went better than ever, cruising along at 65 mph, including uphill with 3 people on board. No smoke whatsoever and the plugs were a perfect colour.

I can only assume the original pump was not only leaking oil into the inlet manifold but it was not supplying enough petrol for good motor performance. Serendipity at work!

Thank you for your help guys, roll on my next project, changing the pivot bolts in the leaf springs!bb

Owen, I will send on that info in next few days to youHi all,

Glad to hear all is well. The original fuel pump is an excellent pump when properly rebuilt, I don't use an electric pump on my 34 and have never had fuel supply problems due to the pump and I think you want to keep it functional, especially for the vacuum boost for the brakes and wipers. Kits are quite readily available here.

Guscha, if that is what you look like I will personally present you a case of Irish Whiskey!

I will rebuild the origonal pump, the Packard will be off the road for most of January and Febuary for TLC, after completing 85 weddings in 2008!

As for my prize of a bottle of whiskey I will look back through the posts to see who suggested the cause of the problem first. My decision will be final, any objectors will be executed!

Pat.

After extensive investigation, collaboration, interrogation, collation, I, the competition panel, have decided that HH56 pointed his wise finger in the direction of my complaint, both generally and precisely!

That is the final, binding, no-nonsense decision. Any problems , go tell the Marines!
