Honestly, you guys who pick up welding so easily are giving me a complex of some kind and at my age I am too stubborn and cheap to spend money on shrinks.
I must be the only one on the forum who cannot seem to grasp the simple concept of speed, temperature, and thickness and put them together at the same time. Thank goodness for bolts.

Well, it looks like some work had already been done. Now to fix it. It looks like the pickup tube was replaced with a copper tube and JB Weld to the bottom of the tank and the tube was stuck out the side port and soldered to keep it from leaking. what I'm looking at is replacing the copper tube with a steel tube and soldering it back to the bottom of the tank. I'm just wondering about how I'm going to connected it to the port and if the threads are still good enough to connect the gas line back to it.
Wish me luck. Wes P.S. In the pictures I've already removed the JB Weld and solder.

Wes, with a new steel tube and the steel tank, why not braze them together? Stronger than solder and maybe easire too. JWL

You could also use fittings thru the tank side to duplicate the outer connection. Didn't see anything like Packard used but with a combination of straight fittings and a nut you could insert the male fitting thru the hole from the outside and tighten it in place. Either braze it in position or maybe use just a nut and sealing washers to fasten it mechanically. Either braze the pickup tube into the inner end of that fitting or thread a female straight fitting onto the pipe thread and use an inner inverted flare connection to add a short length of tubing for the pickup piece.
These are 5/16 inverted flare x 1/8 NPT fittings and the nut is 1/8 pipe thread. They may also be available in 1/4 pipe but I didn't check.
