Mecum is offering this survivor '32 Twin Six Coupe Roadster at its upcoming Monterey auction.

Unfortunately I won't be bidding, but a couple of features caught my eye.

One being the rear bumper which is "stepped out" to accommodate the rear mounted spare, was this usual? The other being the speedometer/tachometer mounted in the glove box door which is additional to the speedo in the instrument panel. Or is it specifically a Tachometer with mph markings as well?

For 1934 only Packard put the RPM in third gear on the speedometer. This car was talked about elsewhere around here. It's a nice piece of homegrown machine work. Given they deleted the odometer, I don't understand why they didn't delete the MPH as well.

I like that car and I will enjoy it while I can because I am sure that it will be ruined in a restoration shop.

That is a tachometer, looking at the left side view of the engine you will see the tach drive coming off the distributor drive shaft tower to the fire wall.

Regarding the tach, I've looked at this car a couple of times in the last few years, once at Hershey and once at the owner's garage. I'm not saying it was done at the factory, but it is definitely a tachometer and it does not look like it started life as a speedo. It looks like a real Waltham gauge too.

Here is a picture of the drive.

G'day alsancle,
You've been a member here for a couple of years but, first posts so

Also see the tach is "redlined" at 3,500!

And I invite you to include any Packard/s you may have in the Packard Owner's Registry.

Thanks. I recognize quite a few of the forum members so I shouldn't be a stranger to all. I have a thread going on the AACA forum regarding factory tachometers in Packards so this is interesting subject for me. I don't happen to own one right now but am surrounded by friends and family owners.
