That starter damage is not unexpected with prolonged use of 12 volts on a 6 volt starter, and related damage to the flywheel ring gear will also occur over time. Perhaps the carburetor is the problem, but these cars should start quite easily on 6 volts at below-freezing temperatures. At very low temperatures (below 0 Fahrenheit) consider the use of a dipstick heater to warm the oil for a few hours first. I'd strongly recommend finding the starting problem and returning to 6 volts.

There were also frost plug heaters available for these old cars. I have one somewhere in my parts bin. I also have a electric heater with a magnetic base that can be attached to the block or oil pan. I regularly started the Bombardier snowmobile which used a Chrysler flathead inline six with 6 volt electrics at temperatures as low as -40. The trick was to drain the oil and warm it on a stove and bring the battery inside and warm it also. With a block heater and an electric battery blanket there would be no problem starting a Packard on 6 volts either if the car is well maintained.

Barrie, my '56 likes to have 2 presses of the gas pedal before starting. Press, let-up, Press, let-up, start.

I was getting irriated enough to rebuild the carb before I figured out this problem. Now, that it's under control and the pattern is definite, I'm okay with it for the time-being.

Mal, BLOODY cold is when it reachs -60F like it did last week (actually only -38F with a windchill of -60F).

Dave,

We're having a 40C day today after being in the mid 30's all week. After driving over in the '41 this morning to see Peter, the guy I bought my '38 from, I returned home melting, immediately turned up the air-con and stayed inside.

I canbt relate to the ice bear folks here! lol! Mal, we also regularly get 40 C days here so cold starts is no problem. I was advised to check for stuck lifters, but they seem to be going up and down very smoothly after I removed the valve side covers to check. Has to finish my spray painting before tackling this situation.

Long time since I posted. But here is some pics of a colour I am trying. Sprayed the inside boot lid. I am not totally happy yet. It is too green in direct sunlight. It is a paint called 'brewster green" from an Aston Martin. The paint manufacturer is Max Meyer. I am happy with the paint quality, but still in 2 minds about the colour. The ditzler paint chips has a color called Spruce green. I am trying for that or to get it as close as possible to the car in the photo. I think these cars look better in a darker color. I need you guys opinions please. I dont want a frog car! haha!!
