My "GUESS" is C - The Silver 23 (P-40), mainly because there were some Warhawks/Kittyhawks fitted with Packard Merlins.

Mal (Ozstatman) and Tom (Rocky46), I did my best to cause confusion by "supporting" links but both of you remained at the Packard wheel. Please find attached an abstract of the P-40 Warhawk manual, where it is called B-40 (click to enlarge). Don't be confused by the word "RESTRICTED". After that many years it is public domain.
For those of you who want to go the whole nine yards it follows "A very nice color documentary film on flight instruction for the P-40 Warhawk fighter plane." A YouTube commentator noted: "This is a P40F version with the Packard Merlin engine. The Allison versions had a air intake on top of the engine cowling." <iframe width="500" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TOIg7JxHQBk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I see, its neck and neck between Australia and Norway. As a side note, I'm anything but sure if US fighter planes had been really the fastes at that time.
Now to the 3rd round. The fastes bomber is required. A - Packard Brown Bomber B - Mosquito with molded wooden fuselage C - Boeing Death Angel D - Douglas A-20 A E - world record holder Packard LePere with Packard Liberty engine (attached below) Attach file: (29.61 KB) (31.20 KB)
