Which had been Britain's heaviest bomber in 1944?

1 - Avro Lancaster with homing pigeons in the event of radio failure

2 - Short Stirling, deployed even in the German Kampfgeschwader 200.

3 - Handley Page Halifax, part of the fleet of Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda

4 - Royal Air Force R33 which was called a "Pulham Pig".

5 - Vickers Windsor powered by 4 x Merlin 65 V12 liquid-cooled engines developing 1,635 horsepower

Avro Lancaster

Used Google then Wikipedia, both useful tools, but how much can you believe on the Internet? Having to put my faith in these, here's what I found:

Avro Lancaster: Empty weight: 36,900 lb (16,738 kg) and Loaded weight: 55,000 lb (24,948 kg)

Short Stirling: Empty weight: 46,900 lb (21,274 kg) and Loaded weight: 59,400 lb (26,944 kg)

Handley Page Halifax: Empty weight: 37,870 lb (17,178 kg) and Loaded weight: 54,400 lb (24,675 kg)

Royal Air Force R33:Useful lift: 58,240 lb (26,470 kg)

Vickers Windsor: Empty weight: 38,606 lb (17,548 kg) and Loaded weight: 54,000 lb (24,545 kg)

Based on those stats I'm plumping for the Short Stirling, clearing the heaviest WW2 Bomber with both empty and loaded weights being the heaviest in their class. The R33, was not a WW2 Bomber but an airship which was broken up in 1928

Mal, I'm with you when it comes to the Wikipedia data. Even other sources report similar data. What a pleasure to see how spirited you fight. Against this backdrop it is anything but easy to inform the world, that Norway could balance the loss. Please find below attached the original answer from PMCC.

But why they say, that the Lancaster had been the heaviest Britain bomber in WW2? I guess that -> this source is close to the truth:

"...Avro Lancaster Mk II and Special, the heaviest bombers in the European theatre of war, in action during WW2..."

These special versions were improved (Wikipedia:)

"...to carry the 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) Tallboy and then the 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) Grand Slam earthquake bombs ... This was the largest payload of any bomber in the war..."




Congratulation Tom! The operator did a lot to confuse you. Neither the mobilization of two white buffalos nor the huge airship and the four-engined Vickers Windsor, powered by Merlins, could throw you off the track.

What fighter plane became known as the "tank buster" in the North African Campaign?
