Maybe it's time for an impact wrench investment.

Not a bad idea and it could be that the shocks were put on by a garage or tire shop that used an impact wrench to tighten the nuts. I usually buy quality tools but for light or one or two time use Harbor Freight has saved my sanity more than once.

Take a Dremel tool and cut off wheel and slice the nuts.

Almost impossible to wrench the nuts up there. I hold them still with a 9/16 box wrench and turn the shock off with the big honking vice grips. Otherwise it is fire up the grinder with a cutting disc and cut the shock off on the bottom side.

Well I actually succeeded in getting it done with a very limited amount of trouble...pain on the other hand...I swear I have the hips of a much older man. Funnily enough I was injured more while washing the car than working on it...pro tip: keep clear of that damned cormorant lest you fancy a puncture wound!

The impact gun was a dream, with the exception of the passenger side where the watts linkage was partially blocking the nut. Either way I got it done and the top nuts weren't frozen in place, thankfully. Probably because the shocks I did remove were oil filled from Sears and leaked all over the place!

The car squeaks and rattles even less now (the new windshield gasket helped with that too) and definitely rides better. Next up? The rear exhaust hanger!

I read "Unsafe at any Speed" and I think the opening of the book was too distracting from the central issue. However, I saw a girl's face after hitting the dashboard of a Corvair and there was nothing left. Worse than being kicked by a horse. When Nader was in college he hitch hiked across the country and witnessed the mayhem taking place at accident scenes. I'm fortunate to never have been in an accident. When I was a kid I lived next to a gas station on Route 22 and saw cars with blood spattered throughout the interior. So I would heed Nader's advice and drive those Packards in a conservative manner.

OUCH!

Anyone have part number 465710, the rear exhaust hanger? So far seems like everyone is out, thought Max Merrit did offer to rebuild mine - I thought I'd check here first

I've decided to rebuild my exhaust hanger using some old tire. Now I just need to figure out how to get the riveted part that's still on the frame out.
