Yes, it goes into wood. I also have a 1936 and it screws into wood (no nut plate). On my cars there is a ash member which attaches where the frame kicks up over the axle. Maybe there was nut plates that are missing behind the Sheetmetal which is over the wood.
Is the wood hollowed out behind the nut plate?

I can't comment on the 1932 or 1936 but on my 1934 Eight sedan the fasteners within the rear fender wheel well arch are hex-head fine thread machine screws with fender washers. I'm assuming that's the original construction but don't know for absolute fact.

Do you know the head size? A 1/2 inch head is generally 5/16 shank, and 7/16 head is generally 1/4 shank. Thanks for looking at it.

They appear to be 1/4-28, 7/16 across flats.

Thanks, I'll probably use some inserts for wood so i can use 1/4-28s. Thanks again.

If you take a picture of the location in the fender, I'll check on my '32 901. I don't recall any of those going into wood.
EDIT - They all have hex heads and would be 1/4 28 bolts, but give me a pic and I'll double check. EDIT More Thoughts I seem to also remember weld nuts in a few locations.

I looked and it appears that all of the bolts in the curved section of the wheel well are weld type nuts (1/4" X 28). I now remember that I needed to replace some of them on the car. The original ones were riveted on. I used small SS machine screws on the ones I replaced.
