JW - I've heard of it, and thought about it. I think I'm cleaning up 83 years of neglect. Once I have it all dialed in, I'll probably run 70/30 distilled water/anti-freeze. If I see the rust returning, I'll jump to the Evans. I want to get the cooling system 100% dialed in before I switch to something like Evans.

Kevin - I got the idea from the AACA forum, and this is the 3rd or 4th time I've cleaned it out. I'm collecting quite a bit of crud out of the block! I also flushed the block with Evaporust using a pump and a bucket heater before I started this process!

Ken, there has been some discussion here and other sites about using distilled water in our cooling systems. It seems distilled water has a leaching effect on some of the metals and can lead to problems. I would suggest using deionized water instead. It is readily available at your local super market. We used to call it "ironing water" because it was used in steam irons, back in the day when people ironed their clothes. This water kept the irons from getting corroded up.

Working through the flushing. It’s getting slowly better, but still running warm. Seems related to speed and load, so either I’m still fighting a tight engine, or it is a radiator capacity issue. The new rings have about 550 miles on them, so they should be pretty close to seated, I would think.

The radiator is dropping heat evenly across it, so I I don’t think anything is clogged up. It is a newer core - I’m starting to wonder if the core doesn’t have the right capacity? Has anyone done a flow check with the radiator in the car? I’m thinking I could dump 5 gallons in the top of the radiator and time how long it takes to come out the bottom, starting the stopwatch when water first came out? Would that work?

Unfortunately, where I live right now, I with have miles of stoplights or I have to get on the freeway, so I need to be able to run 50-60 mph without getting warm.

I drove about 40 miles round trip this weekend to go for a bike ride. Good times!

It would be best to fill the radiator to the level you normally keep it at when running then let it flow. Even though it is not a lot with the height of the radiator it still will have a higher pressure when full as opposed to partially filled. This article I found explains it.

Thanks Bill - I was thinking the same thing.

I've been calling around, and cannot find anyone locally who can truly flow test the radiator. I'm going to get the evaporust done, to make sure I don't have any more rust, then I will either try to flow test it myself, or find a shop.

i tried the evans coolant..wasted my money....took it out. run antifreeze with zero issues.

It ran stupid hot and pretty sure it was what cracked my original head. no problems since with 50/50. Little guy is 13 in October.
