The shop that just rebuilt my generator said that guys will sometimes crank up their voltage regulators because they'll put out a bit more while puttering around town, but then it can be too much if you're out on the highway. (The guy that rebuilt my generator has been rebuilding generators since the 70's)

Just a caution that you don't turn it up too much!

He also said to make sure the points are clean. This can be an issue particularly for cars that are not used regularly.

Information on setting/testing regulators in the Literature Archive.

A long, long time ago in another galaxy far, far away we would sometimes fit a smaller diameter pulley to the generator on cars that were only driven around town. This smaller pulley allowed the generators to turn over a little faster and to better keep the battery charged.

For regulator adjustment: you could set up to 15V without significant problems, but you wouldn't want to drive it like that indefinitely.

As for the smaller pulley, this would cause no electrical problems, but you would want to be sure you don't exceed the max generator speed.

15V might create problems on a 6V system! LOL

I need to adjust up my charging voltage up the 6 volt caribbean...thought I would add a picture to this thread. I took the cover off my voltage regulator, and was happy to find adjustment screws for current (middle relay) and voltage (right rely) I went for a drive tonight, and was reading 6.9 or Max 7 volts. Now to adjust it up a little bit!

Thanks to Ross for his usual simplifying of oft daunting bits. JWL makes a good point re: seldom driven urbanite 6-volt cars. Posts like this and BigKev's "Presentation" are Packard Info at its best, which is saying much, in addition to Howard (HH56), with his encyclopedic command of Packard details.
