Which number? The casting number or part number?

Starting with an alpha like "j" sounds like a motor number, not a part number.

Are you sure that number is on the Head and not on the block?
If it's on the block on a machined pad in the location you described, then the ' J' signifies 1951 (or 24th Series) J2XXXXX = 288, 8Cyl, 135hp, 200/200 Deluxe, 5 bearing J4XXXXX = 327, 8Cyl, 150hp, 250/300, 5 bearing J6XXXXX = 327, 8Cyl, 155hp, 400 Patrician, 9 bearing

Let make this easy. If the number is located in the same place as indicated in the picture below, or in a similar location a bit more forward then that is the engine number on the block.
J403816 is a 327, 8cyl, 150ho, from a 250/300 car.

This thread is from a day or so ago--it wanders but I think the final conclusion is it might have been an optional original engine.
