That was a serious labor of love to install that Hydramatic: develop and fabricate the adapters, and then go the very long extra mile to make a bracket and fabricate linkage to use the push button unit with the Hydramtic shifter.

In addition, as far as I have been able to find, the shift pattern on this Hydramatic would be NDSLR with S being "second". I suspect the fistful of splices has to do with rewiring the shifter contacts to work with this new arrangement. Combined with the fact that Park was done by placing the shifter in R then shutting off the car, who knows how it was wired up exactly.

Any detail photos and information showing the PB actuator unit and how they might have done the install and mechanical connection to the transmission would be much appreciated. Some of the solutions used on your car might be workable for those wanting to install the modern GM transmission today.

He was a welding/metallurgy engineer for US Steel - and he took great pleasure at fixing things, or improving on design shortcomings with custom parts.

I am going to see this car tomorrow, Carl is happy to let me take a look at it even though I’m not interested in buying it. I want to see how the transmission was mounted and wired. Who knows if the next owners will respect any of this unique configuration.
So if anyone wants any specific info/details/pictures from this car, speak now or forever hold your peace.

The photo of 10/16 in the post above looks like it might have a clevis and rod linkage so could it be using a Rolls Royce actuator unit and is there any version ID visible. If RR, is it mounted close to how RR did it on later GM trans and does there look to be any major clearance to the frame or body issues like there is with the Packard unit with the trans needing to move to the side before the actuator can be removed?
If not the RR unit then would be interested in the actuator at the trans and any ideas on what they have used or done. If it is the factory unit how was it mounted or where placed and what kind of added linkage to adapt to the GM trans. Any chance the owner would have any kind of documentation or wiring diagram to accompany the splices if not a factory actuator? Attach file: RR actuator.jpg (284.62 KB)

Howard,
I haven't run across any wiring schematics. Dad probably has a piece of paper with it somewhere. Might have been stashed in a logical place - 60 years ago - then left "there"... But I haven't run into it yet. I look forward to in-person showing tomorrow with somebody who knows what they're looking at... So - if you want pics of anything in particular - please post a wish-list
