A thermostat retaining ring fits over some bumps or notches in the hose outlet and holds the thermostat up in position. Max Merritt has them as probably does Kanter and maybe Tucson Packards. Possibly you could even make one yourself that would be non rusting out of stainless steel spring or music wire.

The old retainers often rust away to nearly nothing and either fall into the head water jacket or their pieces get sucked into the upper radiator tank.
This is what the retainer looks like:  and this is what the nubs on the thermostat housing look like:

Sometimes the little nubs that hold it in place also rust away so check your housing to be sure you don’t also need to find one.
