Nice assortment! Odd but I can open any PDF in the Literature archives but any linked to thread postings must be downloaded first on my iPad. I can’t think of a reason why that happens.

Ok, I figured out a way to disassemble the low range brake. What I’m wondering is why there is so much sludge in the bottom of the brake. This transmission the fluid looked and smelled normal (different transmission than earlier in the thread) so I’m curious where this sludge came from. I already wiped some off the piston but there is plenty remaining in the center by the spring.

Note to reader: both of these parts are upside-down relative to their installation in the car/transmission, so the sludge is on top in the photo.

That is mostly spent friction material from the clutch facings. It will settle anywhere the fluid flow does not keep it in suspension.

Thanks Ross. On this transmission the bands were worn down noticeably (nearly to the bottom of the grooves); I have not yet checked the HR or DD clutches. I figured the relative lack of actual fluid circulation in the piston circuit would have something to do with the buildup.

Aside from obviously being a sign of clutch wear, does this sludge tend to do any harm by itself?

Edit: I noticed it has a good amount of metal grit in it, so the answer is probably "yes".

I made a video on disassembling and reassembling the low range brake without using ANY of the special tools. It's a bit clumsy, but not too hard to do.

Is it OK to make the trans oil cooler lines completely out of metal line? Or are hoses required?
