Does anyone know the size of nut used to hold the carb on the intake manifold of a 49 288?

Believe they are 5/16-24 and there should also be a lockwasher used with the nuts.

Seems as though neither 16 or 24 fits the studs. Could it be metric?

Parts book gives a 5/16 x 24 with lockwasher as Howard said.

I don't know what anyone could possibly use that's metric

Just seemed like neither size wanted to go on. I got about a third of the nut on and it just stopped like it was trying to cross thread. I'll try cleaning them up tonight and trying again.

Nothing metric on a Packard unless some previous owner put in threaded inserts and metric studs which seems very unlikely!

Perhaps you need to run a die or thread chaser over the. I always clean with a brass brush and a little brake cleaner first to remove any thread gunk that can emulate a cross thread.
