Interesting caption as the Golden Anniversary cars were for the 1949 23rd Series, not the 1950 cars.

Thanks Ross. The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded on February 20, 1909. In 1949 it celebrated its 40th anniversary.

As with many photographs posted online in recent years from the Detroit Public Library... the descriptive caption was obviously written by an imaginative young person who was not around when these things happened.

What is actually being shown here is a Packard convertible leading a caravan of cars OUT of what was once officially known as "The Packard Gate." What was The Packard Gate? It was one of the entrances to/exits from the old Michigan State Fair Grounds.

During times of the Michigan State Fair (and sometimes other activities at the grounds) Packard and Detroit area new car dealers sometimes had caravans of cars. These caravans drummed up attention and publicity. They drove from the Fair Grounds to various locales like Palmer Park and then back to the State Fair Grounds. For a while the Detroit Auto Show for new cars was once held at this location.

Mention of the Golden Anniversary on the gate at this point had no direct relationship to the time or occasion of this photograph.

Packard sponsored The Packard Gate and had a nice pavilion here with PMCC's latest cars. The 1954 Packard Panther/Daytona was displayed here. It was preceded by the Pan American concept car and other Packards. Some photos of Pan Americans and Panthers were also taken at what was once a horse race track– again at the State Fair Grounds.

How do I know? As an old Detroiter (who grew up there while loving Packards) I went through this gate many times. I have other photos of The Packard Gate in my collection.
