Here we go--it is just some tubing welded together and fitted with little feet to keep it from shifting out of the lift slides. I just loop chain around it and into my lifting bracket which picks up any two studs, non adjacent, in the center row of studs. By looping the chain over the bar, I can tap the chain left and right with a hammer to center an engine up on installation.

I always remove the hood for space and for the light. Just shove a bunch of towels under the back corners and have someone hold up the front while you take the bolts out. It really is just 5 minutes.

I have the same one, one of the clubs was selling them some years back. They were advertised in the back of the monthly Packard Club publication.

Thanks Ross, that's exactly what I was looking for. I have a bit of a lip on the lift slides that I can use to make some feet, maybe 1/2". I think yours is deeper. But assuming the bar doesn't flex too much it should work. Now I'm on the hunt for some scrap metal to use.

Mine didn't come from the club. I don't remember where I got it.
The small text along the bottom is "The Original FENDER GRIPPER" and "Made in the U.S.A".
I found them listed at ALL-ROUNDTOOLKING

I don't know what you will get from ALL-ROUNDTOOLKING.
They are listed in China.
The original FENDER GRIPPER was produced by Drake Automotive Group which was purchased by Holley in 2020.
Holley still sells the FENDER GRIPPER, but they don't list a Packard version.

Finally found some time today after work to move forward. One of my daughters and I pushed Rusty into place on the lift and get him off the ground. The underside is pretty rusty but on the frame it appears to be only surface rust.

But everything is here minus the tailpipe and the fuel tank. Everything present on the front and not in terrible condition

We drained the transmission and I'm happy to say the fluid was bright red and looked/smelled fine.

The engine oil was a different story. Upon removal of the drain plug, about half a gallon of water came shooting out, followed by quite a bit of black oil. It all smelled rancid. Once most of the oil was out we enjoyed watching globs of sludge ooze out of the hole. So we'll see what the inside of the engine looks like once I get it pulled. Hopefully this weekend if I can get time. As much as I want to do Ross's trick with the 2-post lift, I doubt that I'll have time to source metal and fab it up. I may just have to use the engine lift that's already here to get it out this time. Time is of a premium and I won't have nearly enough this weekend between all the other obligations and plans.

I'd put the plug back in the oil pan and pour the trans fluid into the engine and keep some of it back to pour in the carb and spark plug holes. It will probably help soften sludge and goo in the engine. Putting the car back on the ground and pushing it outside and flushing the underside with a hose and nozzle will help get rid of some of the loose, rusty, dusty stuff, and make working on it a little cleaner and easier. If you have the seats and rugs out, washing down the floor and inside the doors, trunk, underhood area, and other body spaces can make working on it a lot less nasty.
