Yeah, bigger car, more weight. I’m not 100%, but I believe the 120CD touring sedan uses 9 leaves and the springs are 1.75 in width. The 138CD used 2in width and 10 leaves.

I’m going to start with calling the muffler shop. The shop that installed it before is a guy I went to high school with and have known forever. There’s a good possibility that he’ll take care of it very inexpensively. Anyway, can’t hurt to give him a call.

Um, isn't your sway bar bolted to the shocks backward? If you reverse it, the bar will be above the exhaust pipe and move yet further away from it with increasing load.

Near as I can tell from the pictures, it needs to rotate 180 degrees about its main axis, which also puts the center curvature of the bar pointing upwards away from the dif.

Good catch, Ross. You are correct. The sway bar is essentially coaxial with the shock absorber pivot.

Well, that might explain things. I had taken a picture before I removed it just for this purpose. It appears (clearly) I did not accurately process things in my head when I went back and consulted the picture. It’s quite clear.

EDIT: it appears that the part number for the 138s lines up with the same part number as a 120 coupe. Were the strike plates for the coups and sedans really different? Also, it looks like the part that Steele Rubber references (337621) lines up to the 2 or 4 door CONVERTIBLES. So, again…anyone know if there is really a difference?


I need some help…I need to send my door lock striker plates in to be revulcanized. Remember, I have a 1937 138CD limo version of the 120.
I believe the strikers are the same, but I noticed in the parts list that the 138s show a different part number. I really don’t understand why that would be.

Last year, I got a replacement from Flackmaster for one door because I was missing pieces of the original. What he sent me (presumably for a 120) was an exact match of the other doors and worked great.

The part number that Steele Rubber indicates they do is 337621 which lines up to the 120s. What is listed for the 138s is 314761.

I started the carburetor swap today. The first bit of good news was that these screws came out without incident. I did replace the screws, though.

That let me get the choke stove installed.

I got the Stromberg carb out and took some time to clean it before putting the Carter in, complete with my adapter for the air cleaner.

I will need to make a new brace for the air cleaner as the adapter raised it up about a 1/2 inch. That shouldn’t be hard to do.

I also found that I had to adjust (shorten) the accelerator linkage quite a lot. That surprised me a bit. I had to run the adjustment almost all the way in.

Aside from making a new brace for the air cleaner, I just need to make the tube from the choke to the choke stove and make the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor. I’ll also be adding a glass bowl fuel filter while I’m at it. Not sure if it’s really needed as it never had it in its first 87 years, but it can’t hurt. I’ll do that tomorrow….it’s dinner time.

Hopefully, the weather forecasters are right and the next few days should be a bit warmer. I woke up this morning to find that the gas valve on our furnace failed and the house was down to about 55 degrees. With the gas fireplace and a couple of space heaters, we have it up to about 68 now. I’m good with that. They can’t get the new valve until Monday, so please think warm thoughts!
