Still I don't think I'm certain you aligned it properly.
Is your oil pan dented way in or something? It should not hit the pan but it might get close. I would guesstimate it's about 5/16 between the arm and pan in reverse. Drawing shows Park, note the arc drawn which is the swing angle. Here is a video of the linkage operation. This one is kind of loose but it shows you.youtube.com/shorts/8VWbsWP6gmA?si=NLFC9LZKY-UjmBNx If you put it in park then simply rock it "over the hump" you are in Neutral, then you should click into H, D, L, R in succession. R should feel the same, you should not feel a "ting" before it seats properly. Only if you turn it slightly past R should you feel resistance.

I assume he may actually be going into Drive instead of High, and Low instead of Reverse, meaning his adjustment could just be one off. It's a possiblity.

Hello everyone. My problem persists and now there is another problem- winter has arrived on the weekend which prevents me from driving the car to check results of anything I try. I guess I will move on to other [inside] projects and come back to this in the spring. At this point I believe my problem lies somewhere in the shift controls [actuator, adjustment, etc.] although I can't understand that I've never managed to hit it right after all my attempts. Anyway, my project is going on hold for now until I can drive the car on dry roads, and I will be back on it in the spring. Will post on it then. Thanks to all who weighed in, and Merry Christmas to all.
Clifford
