Gas tank back in, hopefully for the last time.

I did paint the straps, and I replaced the T-Bolts as the threads were pretty knackered.

Also, installed new anti-squeak, strips.

Just need to finish hooking up the wiring and fuel line and all that should be taken care of. I won't know if I fixed the sended leak until I have the tank completely full again.

Which will be post engine return.

Last order of business on the gas tank was replacing the gas filler tube to tank connector hose. The old one appears to be made of layers or fabric and rubber and was delaminating and dry rotted. So I needed a replacement. The hose is 2-1/4" I.D. and none of my local parts stores had in stock, and to have them order it required a me to buy a 36" long piece that was fairly expensive. So after some web searching I found that a 1960-1966 C20 Pickup used the exactly same size. So a couple of clicks later it was ordered a few on the way.

As long as it's fuel or vapor line, your car won't care what it was made for! Your original looks much like a longer piece that I just threw away which I had bought probably 50 or more years ago and never used. It was as hard as a rock. I had two feet of it but not usable.

Back to body work...

The trunk lid for sure had its share of bumps over the last 85 years.

Some of the dents were over areas where the wood framing was. So I couldn't just hammer and dolly those spots. Unispotter to rescue! This little tool works great when you need to be a bit more gentle vs the normal slide hammer.

Here it is after sanding the coat of filler.

Not shown, but one corner had a split seam from a long time ago and water
had rusted it away. So rebuilt that corner by building up tack welds and the ground it down to blend in back in.

Shoot…I wish I’d known you needed the filler tube. I had to replace mine a while back when I first started and dropped my tank. My local auto parts had it, but I also had to buy a 36” section. So, I currently have about a 2ft section just laying around.

Test fitting the rumbleseat lid before I start applying any filler to it. The lid is in pretty decent shape. Just some tooling marks around the edges where I unfolded and folded the flanges back over when replacing the wood.

The passenger side was pretty much perfect. The drivers side too low along the top edge, and too high along the side. This is from the shape of lid framing. It's possible the wood shape has changed as it's acclimated to the garage. I've also seen wood radically change shape, twist and cup after cutting from internal stress that gets released when you removed the excess wood that had it locked in. This can really happen on kiln dried wood as it's dried so rapidly.

I was able to shave down a little bit of the wood where the hinge attaches and that helps with the high sides.

For the low edges I was able to drive some metal shims in between the frame and the skin structure in the areas which helped to raise those area.

It's looking pretty good, so I think I can now pull it back off and finish body work on it.
