Oh, that's perfect, thank you!!! If that's what Packard did, that's what I'll do too! Neither my Cavalier or Patrician parts car have any of those little foam blocks, so maybe they started doing that after 53. Maybe I'll get some neoprene, it would be soft and squishy.

Is that a bit of butyl on there? Factory undercoating

The parts book is not very clear on when the clip seals were used, but they are for any place that a clip was used going into the trunk compartment.

I wouldn't be concerned with fresh water entering through those holes since if you are gonna drive in the rain, that whole area will get sprayed down just from driving.

Undercoating sprayed between the the fender and wheelhouse from inside the trunk, correct? None of your clips are exposed in the wheelhouse, correct?

Anywhere there is a stud, it is easy enough to use a rubber washer as the parts book mentions, I think they are the same washers that are used for the fins.

On my rear fender trim, there are 6 connecting points. The 1st one (front) is a stud that penetrates the fender and wheelhouse. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th are the clips that penetrate the fender, but not the wheelhouse. The 5th and 6th penetrate the fender only into the trunk compartment.

The ones that are of concern are 1-4 as any moisture that penetrates here can get trapped between the fender and wheelhouse.

I know I'm overthinking this by many people's standards, but nothing's too good for my Cavalier!

Were there supposed to be any drain notches rather than being a completely sealed compartment? Fully sealed, it seems a recipe for eventual rust.

I asked myself that same question, and would agree that it's a recipe for eventual rust, which is probably why so many of these cars have issues in this area. When I looked at my donor fenders I didn't see anything that would indicate an intentional drain, such as by the mount where the skirt bolts on, or in front of the of the wheelhouse around the rocker area, so I sealed everything up!

I think if moisture gets in between the fender and wheelhouse, those fat fabricy seals that go between the the wheelhouse and fender on the inside, which I think are for sound deadening, would help to trap moisture as well. I don't know what those are called, I call them them trunk snakes. LOL

There is an article on page 55 in this service counselor regarding adding a hole and plug starting in some 54 models so the interior of a particular area could be painted to prevent rust. The way I read the article cars before 54 must have had some sealed chambers. If that is the case, it would stand to reason if any clip holes were in those areas then water entering the holes would be trapped and I suspect it stayed inside and did its worst..

That's a good SC. Talks about an updated rear main oil seal as well. Are cork seals what our suppliers have, or maybe a newer modern material?

I have noticed the opening they are referring to that allows the "Side Sills" to be painted on other cars. It is right here and allows the inside of the rockers to be painted. I plan on doing this on my Cavalier using 3M Cavity wax. I'll spray some down between my fenders and wheelhouses as well.
