I use the large C-type that are actually for V8 engines and it works well but others use a different type. There are other threads here on this site discussing it.

C- type is rather inconvenient on a flathead, especially if the manifold is still on.

I used one similar to 53 Cavalier. Mine is a K-D #700 spring compressor. Worked great and pretty easy to maneuver it in those tight spaces. These old spring compressors come up for sale from time to time on Ebay. Someone around you might have one available to borrow.
I took video of pulling the valves on my brother in law's '52. Should be the same procedure for your car. I'll see if I can whip a video together today if I can find the time.

Yes I think 41 to 53 are pretty close… this is my first time doing this.. I just got a compressor from an older gentleman who said he used it all the time.. if u have video that would be great! I can’t find anything on you tube.. I can’t even see how to tool will slip into top of the spring! Any advice welcome…
![]() I did find a cf-12 on eBay so I ordered that one….probably a safer option for a newbie…thanks for all the tips….really appreciated
