No, you want the crossmember to stay on the car. You get the stuff basically in place, then one the bolts are aligned it will "clunk" into place and align the assembly front to back in the car. Only for this particular service operation would removing the crossmember be helpful.

Were you planning on putting together a complete and comprehensive Twin-Ultramatic manual containing all the updates and corrections made? Depending on what's needed, I can possibly help and it would be great to have one for earlier Ultramatics too.

Not sure on the starter as the 56 Nash is supposed to be the same. Wiring diagram implies a side terminal which I don’t see. Not very enthused with using the other starter as it looks like it was dragged out of the woods. But I’ll test it and polish it up. Should be good enough for now.
Starter going on it is an A/L 6301 1K. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nash appears to use a 4 terminal solenoid similar to Packard with the 4th terminal providing 12v to the ballast resistor only when starting. Instead of a stud, is the screw on the back of the solenoid the 4th terminal? With what appears to be a direct battery connection I am a bit confused on what or how their starter switch for auto transmission is doing its job unless the connection they show from the ign switch start terminal is not connected simultaneously the way they show when that auto switch is present.

If the brown wire simply had a ring terminal on it, the same size as the starter busbar lug then that would work perfectly fine. Of course I don’t know if the starter is even original to the hash engine. I would just assume that that’s how it worked on whatever it was off of. This other starter tested OK even though it looks terrible if I have problems with it I’ll just buy another one from Ross as he has a couple of shelves of these sorts of things. Or Mike Dulinski.
A bit of a tip for bleeding the brake lines. If you remove the boot from the accelerator pedal, you can look right at the brake cylinder. “Luckily” for me, my boot was missing to begin with.

The entire brake system was properly adjusted then bled. The result is that pressing as hard as possible with both feet, the pedal ends up about half an inch from the floor.
I’d appreciate input on if this is proper operation.

It's been a long time since I've driven a Packard with manual brakes, the last being a 1951 Henney-Packard combination, but I don't recall the brakes going down nearly that far. I can't imagine that a 1955 would be any different so it sounds like there may still be air in the lines and/or more adjustment is in order. The fluid doesn't compress so something is compressing or taking up the travel and those are really the two choices. With the system having been apart, did you go around it to several times to bleed? It can sometimes take four or five passes to get out all the air so quite helpful to have a pressure system to use that will flush at the same time.

Thanks. I’m using new shoes and slightly worn (not oversized) drums… I’m thinking that that extra play in the system is the reason. There’s not much going on towards the start of travel, but the pedal firms up well in the second half.
I only did one pass to bleed.

Presuming shoes are adjusted and bleeding is good, 1/4 inch is the recommended pedal free play. If the free play adjustment or possibly wear somewhere else in the linkage is excessive those situations too could cause the low pedal. Except for the master being in the engine compt instead of under the floor, my 47 has essentially the same brake pedal geometry and linkage. That pedal is solid hard by about the half way point leaving a good 4 inches before it would hit the floor.
