The '53 Clipper wheels will bolt right on your '56. The are both a 5 on 5" pattern.

The confusion starts with some '54 and all '55 and '56 Clipper wheels as they are a 5 on 4 1/2" pattern.

You will likely be astounded how a set of even cheap radials will transform your '56.

Hopefully, as that's what I'm putting on my 55 Deluxe. 😁

What's your thoughts on radial vs. bias ply with regards to ease of steering? I inflate my radials to between 0 and 5 under max sidewall pressure. The ones on my Deluxe are AT sidewall pressure right now, might bleed them a bit once the weight of the car is on them. At some point I expect to do a contact patch test and adjust the air pressure accordingly.

That's good to know, thanks Ross. Now I just need to find time to make the switch.

Then do some test driving then order some Diamond Backs. Need to clean up and paint the wheels too.

The 235/75R15 Hankook Kinergy ST tires have a listed max inflation pressure of 51psi. O to 5 under that is way too much IMO. I run them at 32psi and they ride real nice and steering is fine. These inexpensive tires have a Uniform Tire Quality Grading of 680 AA, which equals the best passenger tires on the market -- only 2% of tires rate above 600. Not only that but they don't look ultra modern, having a semi-retro appearance. They're only blackwall though. I wonder if Diamond would whitewall them.

Scott, the Hankook Kinergy ST's do come in thin whitewall if you look around. I picked some up in 235/75 for about $90/tire. I currently have mine set at 35 PSI. Huge difference in drivability of the car.

I just ordered a set of Auburn Classic 820R15 radials with 3 1/2” whitewall for my 1956; I’m looking forward to experiencing the upgrade!

Please post pictures of different angles of the tires on the car. I would love to see how they look. I'll be doing some Diamond Backs at some point on my '56. But the Hankooks are going to with fine for now.

Sidewall pressure is the maximum pressure the tire should run at. Maximum pressure is appropriate for a tire carrying its maximum rated load. Passenger cars rarely, if ever, approach maximum loading for tires, and over-inflation simply gives a hard ride and hammers the suspension and body. Severe overinflation will reduce traction and may lead to poor handling, besides giving a rough, harsh ride. For a 1950s Packard with appropriate size tires, somewhere around 28 PSI (cold) is probably about right. If original manufacturer tire pressure specs are available, I would consider them, keeping in mind that they may be a little lower than ideal. Adding 10% to manufacturer's tire pressure specs on pre-1975 cars often gives good results. An exception would be very early cars with narrow, high pressure tires on non-drop center rims.
