Just spotted this 1955 Patrician currently for sale on Craigslist in Taunton, Massachusetts. Think it looks pretty decent for the asking price of $11,500. Ad states needs interior work, but all I am seeing are a couple of worn spots on the driver's seat that I think most people could live with. Odometer shows 56K which I think is the original mileage.

Another Craigslist Packard you might want to consider is this 1953 Clipper Deluxe Sportster. The Sportster was a deluxe club sedan that was only offered in 1953 and 1954. It was dressed up with some chrome mouldings to make it look like a hardtop. I once owned a '54 model and it was a great driver. This '53, however, has standard transmission. But it is restored and obviously has had a lot of work done to it. Undercarriage is very clean, so it may have been a frame off job. For $18K, it is worth a look. This is a rare model. Dallas, TX:

The seller states that the 1953 was dressed up to look like a Sportster, not that it is one. They didn’t say if that dressing up included the special headliner of the Sportster.

Hi Nathan,

I have a 56 400 Hardtop that needs to go. It is all original. It hasn't been run in 10+ years. My dad died about 4 years ago and was sick for a few years before that, so I cannot say for certain what kind of work might be involved to get it running again. It is a beautiful car and has been featured in some car magazines in the past. Here is a link to the photos: 56 Packard 400 Google Photos

Don't let distance keep you from getting something that fits what you are looking for. Just have it shipped. I had my 400 shipped from North Carolina to Washington State in the dead of winter. It was an added expense, but way less than I was expecting.

Find someone local to the car you are interested in and pay them a bit to go over and get eyes on the car. Test drive, pictures, etc. A guy from the local/regional Packard Club would be more than happy to help.

That thought never crossed my mind honestly, how much was shipping for that? i would assume its like $2000 or around there. That's honestly a great idea i am a part of the packard club so im sure I can find someone nearby that could be able to help. I especially like the 51-54 cars and of course all the nice ones are far away!

Price for me was $1,700 coast to coast. I paid PGH some cash to go and get eyes on the car. He sent back a detailed report, pictures and videos. Way cheaper than me catching a flight across the country to see it in person. Working through the Packard Club would be an easy way to have someone look at it. Chances are most of the nicer cars out there are owned by guys in the club. So I say find what you like and go from there.

Imanesse - that '56 400 looks great in original condition. Even has factory A/C. That car would clean up nicely even with the worn paint.

Good question. I know what the price guides say, but I also trust a lot of the folks here to help determine a fair price. Most in this forum have not been shy in offering their opinion on a value. It is original and has been garaged until the last 9 years or so when it got moved to under a covered porch with a car cover on it. To my knowledge it has not been run since. Anyone willing to go first and recommend a price range?

Here are a couple of 400's now up for sale which could serve as comparisons to this car:

1956 400. Excellent running and driving original car with 58K original and nice paint and interior. Seller asking $17k but has been for sale for over a year. Car located in Pennsylvania:

facebook.com/marketplace/item/850766056703412

1955 400. Older restoration. Runs and drives. Good paint and chrome. Interior redone but not correct. Presentable driver quality car. Asking $12K. Indiana:

facebook.com/marketplace/item/1372138470493954

1955 400. Runs, but needs cosmetics. Original interior is somewhat deteriorated. Seller asking $6,000. California:

facebook.com/marketplace/item/696753363282289

1956 400. Well preserved original car with original upholstery still covered in plastic. Nice paint and chrome. Seller asking $18K. Texas.

facebook.com/marketplace/item/1365278204852643

Note that these are all asking prices, so what the owners would actually be willing to sell for is anyone's guess. But based on these current offerings, I would put the value on 1manese's car at about $6-$7K, given that it is not running and has significant paint and chrome issues. But the nice original interior is definitely a big plus. I see many of these cars up for sale that are totally trashed inside. That brocade fabric does not wear very well.

I did see this one seemed pretty decent and closer to me. Quickly chatted with the owner supposedly was a texas car for all its life and only was recently brought to ohio. Thoughts?

Figure out why he thinks it needs restored. It’s probably a code word for it barely wanting to run and drive. Though there are some nuts out there that will see an original 50k mile interior with no tears and think it needs “restored”.

That being said, he described it as “great driving” so you will need to ask and see for yourself. Ask for receipts on what was done. Clearly paint and chrome was fairly recent.
