Congrats on getting it all dialed in. Glad it was a simple fix!

After a bit of work, I've managed to get my car waterproof..........almost. I'm still struggling with the trunk seal. I haven't glued it in yet thinking I may have to do a bit of shimming

congratulations!
interesting that on my car it had a shimming strip attached all the way around.
I also give my thanks to HH56 for sharing the SC, might come in handy

That's interesting. It also looks like it has a fibre type layer on the top, kind of like the old cloth electrical tape. Makes me wonder if that is the original factory seal?

That looks like the Bow Drill cloth they would cover some of the weather seals on convertible models with.

I'm thinking the opposite as I've never seen such a thing on the 55's.

All the foam weatherstrip is a closed cell type with a smooth skin of rubber. I have the number somewhere of how thick the skin is supposed to be. IIRC it's in the 5 thou neighborhood.

I think someone bought something not quite right in the past and had to shim it. For the cloth I have no better idea than Kev...

Velveteen is used on a couple weatherstrips for its anti-friction properties but not the trunk. The main use is the front quarter window weatherstrip on the 2-door cars. The replacement Steele pieces do not have velveteen and therefore the front windows are hard to run up and down with the rears still closed unless the alignment is "open" enough that the weatherstrip will hardly seal.

Velveteen is still used today, example on a 2017 Chevy Malibu.
