That's interesting. It also looks like it has a fibre type layer on the top, kind of like the old cloth electrical tape. Makes me wonder if that is the original factory seal?

That looks like the Bow Drill cloth they would cover some of the weather seals on convertible models with.

For the cloth I have no better idea than Kev... Velveteen is used on a couple weatherstrips for its anti-friction properties but not the trunk. The main use is the front quarter window weatherstrip on the 2-door cars. The replacement Steele pieces do not have velveteen and therefore the front windows are hard to run up and down with the rears still closed unless the alignment is "open" enough that the weatherstrip will hardly seal. Velveteen is still used today, example on a 2017 Chevy Malibu.

From that angle your original seal does look like the factory seal. Your new one is from Steele, correct? Was that filler piece added all the way around? Maybe there were a couple of leaks and instead of correcting them like the Service Counsellor that Howard shared instructs, they just added that filler? The filler probably fixed the issue, but may have also made the trunk harder to close.
I would be tempted to try it without the filler. Make sure the channel the seal sits in is sealed, (top and sides) adjust the trunk lid so it's as close as possible, install the seal and see how it does. With my seal from Restoration Specialities I found the top of the seal was about the height of the top of the fender, so if the trunk lid lined up well with the rest of the body the seal would compress the thickness of the trunk lid. As long as water isn't able to pass between the top of the seal and the trunk lid, and the channel is sealed, you should be good to go. Making sure the trunk is sealed well is something you can work on later, it's almost August, gotta get your car on the road!!! Are you getting close!?!?

And upon further inspection of the parts book it turns out it was a 56th only change.
![]() It's a little hard to imagine why they changed it in particular as if the channel was not made deeper nor the trunk lid flange made thinner then the trunk lid would sit too high on the body instead of being flush.
