Don - the gravel shield was photographed in sunlight, and the rear of the car indoors. That may be why they look slightly different. If I put them next to each other the color looks the same. I'm going to take the gravel shield to a paint shop this weekend and see if I can get the color matched. Eventually I hope to repaint the car, but not ready for that yet. I at least want to get the paint code while I have the shield off. It need to go back on the car soon.
Riki - Interesting that there would be different colors of primer on the same car. It seems like that would cause problems with the paint looking different on different panels. Dads - PM inbound

Very slow progress. Way too much other stuff going on. But I did take the gravel shield to a paint shop to see if I could find a match for the original (I think) Mojave Tan. This is the closest I could get with the books they gave me.
![]() I bought a pint (for $100, ouch) to test it and see. I'll probably strip the panel and paint it. That way I'll have direct comparison to the original paint right next to it on the rear of the trunk. ![]() I've not been super happy with my efforts in repainting the black lines on the stainless trim. I've been using paint pens and it's just so inconsistent. So I tried out using 1/8" pinstripe masking tape to cover the silver spots, then sprayed black spray paint over the panel. It definitely looks more even, though there is also quite a few spots where it bled under the tape. I'll have to clean it up. It takes forever to tape everything off. Still not sure this is the best way to do it. It would probably help if I used a better paint instead of a cheap Rustoleum rattle can. Hate to say but I think the marker looks a lot better than the masked type. Perhaps I can record a video showing a reasonable way to do it.

In person the masking tape looks much more even. But I used gloss spray paint, which was probably a mistake. Satin might have looked nicer and not had odd reflections. Also a lot of bleed under the tape that I need to clean up. I really don't know how feasible the masking method is going to be on the long pieces. It would take an enormous effort to mask every line.
I'm probably going to strip the panel I did with the marker and try it again. Maybe with some practice I can get more consistent thicknesses of lines.

Have you considered the Buegler pinstriping tool? It is designed to create crisp lines. You can get different size paint wheels for the line width you want. It has edge alignment attachment that would keep it straight using the next groove.
Looks like a better tool for the job than the ones you have tried thus far.

I have, but when I looked at them before they were fairly expensive. What I'm seeing now from Eastwood and TCP is actually looking more reasonable. I may need to go that route. Somehow the factory was able to get straight and crisp lines, and I'd like to get as close to that as possible.

(This assumes that the Bueglar tool would do the job to your liking.) The factory probably spent a lot to get the equipment that would do the best job. Of course they could amortize the cost over a lot more cars.

Find a Sign Painter/Pin Stripper guy in your area. They could probably make quick work of it.
Another option is thin black vinyl strips. They sell different colors and widths of pinstriping tape that could fit the bill.
