My original white foam gaskets were actually still somewhat soft, as is all the other original weatherstripping on the car. But they weren't nearly as soft as new foam. It's easy to trim down the 1/4" wide foam to fit with a sharp blade. I'm going to get some 1/2" wide foam for the assembly-to-body gasket, since that's about the width of most of the original. Good tip on the welting around the outside. My original stuff is there (mostly) but not in amazing shape. So I may grab some of that as well.

Made the lower rubber gasket for the taillight housings. Used 3/16 rivets and 3/16 x 1/2 washers to install them.
![]() I was going to use 1/2" wide foam for the housing to body gasket, but ended up just doubling up the 1/4" because I have so much of it. Should work ![]() Also made new rubber dust seals that sit below the taillight. Old ones were missing pieces and rock hard. I believe these are a '56 only thing. New hardware for them also. ![]() Reassembled the bumper with new hardware. Old ones were trash, and half of the bolts broke anyways. ![]() ![]() Stripped, repaired, and primed the rear filter panels. I was going to paint them today but I realized that the paint I got was a base coat, so I need to get some clear before I paint. Problem is the paint shop is 45 minutes away, closed on weekends, and I work every day this week. So paintng will have to wait, and so will reassembly of the rear end. ![]()

Finally had some time to drive down the paint shop 45 minutes away, picked up the rest of what I needed. Shot 3 coats of Wandabase, then 2 coats of Lumabase 2000. My body work on these pieces was pretty bad, but I mainly painted these so I could test the color. No one will ever see these parts once the bumper goes back on.
![]() ![]() Hard to tell on the color match, but I think it's close? This is under indoor lighting. ![]() ![]()

It would have been all single-stage lacquer. However, that is pretty much NLA, and single-stage metallic urethane or enamel is very challenging to shoot, as there is a small window between mottling and orange peel. Base/Clear is far more forgiving in that respect.
I think it looks great!

I do think that single stage paint has more vibrant color. The high, clear gloss of 2 stage w/ clearcoat tends to hide some of the color in reflection. But like Kev said, single stage metallic is very difficult to shoot, and you can't do any sort of paint or surface correction afterwards. So what you get when you spray is what you get. With 2 stage metallic, the clear coat can be sanded and polished in order to get a nice even surface. But I do think it loses some of the color richness.

Thanks Riki. I find that very interesting that the fenders would have a different primer than the rest of the car. Wouldn't that mess with the color of the overlying paint? Maybe the old lacquer covered better?

Yeah you would think black because it would block, any fade thru.

The NOS fenders in my basement have a medium dark gray primer as the finish. My assumption is that the reason for that is that if they didn’t paint it very well with the black paint that they would use for the undercarriage then it wouldn’t be as obvious as having pink primer. Of course you could make the same argument for the body so maybe it doesn’t make much sense. One possibility is that the fenders were primed by submerging in primer, which probably was impossible for the bodies hence different primers used.
