The differential pinion seal for 1952 and earlier is a 3 piece assembly consisting of a retainer that is pressed into the carrier, an outer felt ring and an inner seal that is pressed into the retainer and holds the felt ring in position. If you can remove the assembly without damaging the retainer the inner seal can be replaced with a new one that is readily available. I have only done this in the past by taking the ring gear and pinion out of the carrier so that the seal assembly could be pushed out by using a drift against the rear side of the front pinion bearing. Chicago Rawhide # 16117 is a number that worked in the past for the inner seal.

Carl, My rear differential also leaks. Not as bad as yours however. Thanks for bringing it up.It will not need service yet.(I hope.)The rear seal on my Ultramatic leaks more.Still not bad.My guess is I will try to tackle both when the time comes. Brian

The wire going into my steering is probably the horn. No wonder it hasn't worked, it's just hanging there. I noticed in the wiring diagram it goes to the horn relay. When I put the fenders on next week I'll make sure this wire completes the circuit.

Randy Berger and his grandson Ty visited today, shared a lot of stories about Packards, gave me advice on my project. It was a good time!

I don't know about the advice but it was a good time meeting Carl. Meeting other Packard nuts is always a good experience. Carl has made a bold promise so we left after good conversation and he went back to work. He promises to have his car running in a couple of weeks.

Good couple of days since Randy was here...
The gaskets for the engine oil pan and tranny oil pan came in from http://ultramaticdynamics.com/, which I bought off of eBay, as did the paint from Tower Paint. The paint, however, was the dark green from the two tone paint scheme, and I wanted the light green. I painted the firewall the dark green for now, and when I do a full body off restoration in a couple of years paint it the correct color. I cleaned up the water distribution tube, and removed the small dent in the middle (caused by a previous rebuild, in perfect alignment between two cylinders from someone shoving a tool through the middle freeze plug). I also put a couple of coats of 500 degree Dupli-Color rattle can paint labled "Ford New Gray DE1611". I know it isn't exactly the gray from Packard, but it's closer than before. Then and Now sent me a new diaphragm for the vacuum side of my AC fuel pump, the original one they sent didn't have the correct number of holes. I'm also working on the parking / emergency brake system. The handle, pivot/locking mechanism, and lever all work fine. The cables between the wheels and the frame are seized, so I'm going to try and remove them, soak em in kerosene and see if I can save them. $2200 and still spending.
